Why the tornadoes happen here

Central Oklahoma is where four air masses meet, and the specific geometry matters. Warm, moist air flows north from the Gulf of Mexico at low levels. Hot, dry air moves east off the high deserts and the Mexican Plateau at mid levels. Cool, dry air arrives from Canada. And the jet stream, at 30,000 feet, passes overhead in spring providing strong upper-level winds.

The key is not just that these meet but how they stack. Dry air above moist air creates enormous instability, because the atmosphere becomes top-heavy — the moist air below is buoyant and wants to rise violently. Meanwhile the wind changes both speed and direction with height, from southeast at the surface to strong southwest aloft. That change is wind shear, and it makes rising air rotate.

An updraft that rotates is called a mesocyclone, and a thunderstorm built around a persistent rotating updraft is a supercell. Supercells are the storms that produce nearly all violent tornadoes. Central Oklahoma produces the right combination of instability and shear more reliably in spring than anywhere else on Earth.

The dry line is the specific feature to watch. It is a sharp boundary between moist Gulf air to the east and dry desert air to the west, often running north to south across western Oklahoma. It advances east during the afternoon as the ground heats, and storms fire along it. When a spring forecast mentions the dry line pushing into central Oklahoma, that is the setup.

The record and what it teaches

The Oklahoma City metro has been struck by well over 150 tornadoes since records began. Three events define local memory.

May 3, 1999 produced an F5 that tracked through Bridge Creek and Moore. A mobile Doppler radar measured winds of roughly 301 mph within it — the highest wind speed ever recorded on Earth. Thirty-six people died in that tornado. It also produced the first use of the phrase "tornado emergency" in a NWS warning, a term invented that evening by forecasters in Norman who needed language strong enough to convey what was coming.

May 20, 2013 brought an EF5 through Moore again, killing 24 people including seven children at Plaza Towers Elementary. That event drove Oklahoma's school shelter debate and led to substantial construction of safe rooms in schools and homes.

May 31, 2013 produced the El Reno tornado, 2.6 miles wide — the widest ever documented. It killed four storm researchers, including Tim Samaras, and it permanently changed the storm chasing community's understanding of risk. It also killed people who fled in vehicles rather than sheltering, in a traffic jam created partly by television coverage urging people to drive south.

The lesson Oklahoma took from that last point is now standard NWS guidance: do not try to outdrive a tornado in an urban area. Shelter in the lowest interior space available, away from windows.

What Watch and Warning actually mean

Nowhere is this distinction better understood by the public than here, and it is worth stating precisely.

A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes over a broad area, typically covering multiple counties for several hours. It is issued by the Storm Prediction Center in Norman. The correct response is to review your plan, know where your shelter is, keep a way to receive warnings, and stay aware. Life continues normally.

A Tornado Warning means a tornado is occurring or is imminent, indicated by radar or confirmed by a spotter. It covers a small polygon and lasts perhaps 30 minutes. The correct response is to go to shelter immediately.

A Particularly Dangerous Situation tag on a watch, or a Tornado Emergency in a warning, indicates the highest tier of threat — a confirmed large, violent tornado moving toward a populated area. Those words are used sparingly and deliberately.

For sheltering, the priority order is: an underground storm cellar or an engineered above-ground safe room; then a basement; then a small interior room on the lowest floor, ideally a bathroom or closet with no exterior walls; and add a helmet and heavy blankets, since most tornado injuries come from flying debris and head trauma. Leave a manufactured home for a substantial structure before the storm arrives, not during. Most Oklahoma homes lack basements because of expansive clay soil and a high water table, which is why the safe room industry is so developed here.

The rest of the year is not quiet either

Summer brings genuine heat, with July averaging 94 °F and periods above 100 common. The 2011 and 2012 summers were severe, and Oklahoma's all-time record is 120 °F. The climate is transitional, so western Oklahoma is markedly drier and the city sits in the gradient — precipitation drops from around 50 inches in the southeast corner of the state to under 20 in the panhandle.

Winter delivers ice storms that rival the tornadoes for total economic damage. The December 2007 ice storm left more than 600,000 Oklahoma customers without power, some for over a week, and destroyed a large fraction of the metro's urban tree canopy. The October 2020 storm did similar damage remarkably early in the season, when trees still had leaves and therefore collected far more ice weight than usual.

Wind is a constant background condition. Average wind speeds here are among the highest of any American city, which is why the state generates a large share of its electricity from wind. It also means spring fire danger is severe: dormant grassland, low humidity behind a dry line, and 40 mph winds produce fast-moving grass fires, and Red Flag Warnings are frequent in February through April.

A city built around severe weather expertise

Norman, twenty miles south, hosts the National Weather Center: the Storm Prediction Center, which issues every tornado and severe thunderstorm watch in the country; the National Severe Storms Laboratory; the NWS Norman forecast office; and the University of Oklahoma's meteorology program, the largest in the nation.

Doppler radar for weather use was largely developed here. The NEXRAD network that now covers the United States traces directly to research conducted in Norman, and dual-polarization radar upgrades were tested here too. The Oklahoma Mesonet, a network of automated weather stations with at least one in every county, is among the densest state observing systems in the world and provides the ground truth that makes local forecasting unusually good.

The cultural effect is real. Local television meteorologists are prominent public figures, wall-to-wall coverage preempts everything during outbreaks, and children learn shelter procedures the way children elsewhere learn fire drills. Visitors sometimes find the intensity of severe weather coverage excessive. Given the climatology, it is proportionate.

Weather hazards to know about

  • Violent tornadoes

    April through June, peaking in May, with a secondary autumn season

    The highest concentration of EF4 and EF5 tornado occurrence in the world. Most homes lack basements, making safe rooms and interior-room plans critical.

  • Large hail and damaging wind

    March through June

    The same supercells that produce tornadoes produce giant hail and straight-line winds above 80 mph.

  • Ice storms

    November through February, and occasionally October

    Economically comparable to the tornado threat. Heavy accretion destroys tree canopy and power distribution for a week or more.

  • Grass fires and Red Flag conditions

    February through April

    Dormant grassland, single-digit humidity behind the dry line and 40 mph wind produce fires that spread faster than crews can respond.

  • Extreme heat and flash drought

    June through September

    Sustained periods above 100 °F, often accompanied by rapid-onset drought in this transitional climate zone.
